KURZBIOGRAFIE — Zita Oberwalder

ZITA OBERWALDER ist eine österreichische Kunst-Fotografin und Autorin. Sie hat sich vor allem auf Reise- und Architektur- Fotografie spezialisiert und ist als Bildautorin an zahlreichen Publikationen beteiligt. Als Künstlerin ist sie bekannt für ihre analogen Schwarzweiß-Fotografien mit Mittelformat-Kameras, sowie für konzeptionelle „Foto-Essays“. Letztere sind häufig integraler Bestandteil ihrer Ausstellungen. Oberwalder lebt und arbeitet in Graz, wobei das Reisen in ferne Destinationen ein wesentlicher Bestandteil ihres kreativen Prozesses ist.

Oberwalder thematisiert in ihrer Kunst häufig abstrakte Themen wie Zwischenräume, Grenzen, Territorien und den Begriff der „Nicht-Orte“. Weitere typische Themengebiete sind aktuelle Politik, (europäische) Geschichte und christliche Mystik. Motive werden in dem für sie typischen Stil präsentiert: kontrastreiche Landschaften mit gespenstischen Figuren, die an Filmstills erinnern. In Ausstellungen ergänzt sie ihre Fotoserien häufig durch Zitate, Tagebuchskizzen und anderes schriftliches Material.

ZITA OBERWALDER is an Austrian artist, professional photographer, and author. Her focus is on conceptual fine art, travel and architectural photography. She is best known for her analog black-and-white photography with medium and large format cameras, as well as conceptual “photo essays” that often conclude her exhibitions. Oberwalder lives and works in Graz, Austria – however, the act of frequent traveling remains a quintessential part of her creative process.

In her art, Oberwalder frequently addresses abstract topics such as interim spaces, frontiers, territories and the concept of “non-places”. Other typical subject areas include current politics, (European) history and Christian mysticism. Motives are usually presented in her trademark style: eery sceneries, reminiscent of movie stills, and in high-contrast. In exhibitions, she often supplements her photo series with quotes, diary sketches and other written material.

Kurzbiografie
Die Künstlerin wurde 1958 in Leisach, Osttirol geboren. Ihre Ausbildung zur Fotografin absolvierte sie in Lienz und Innsbruck, die Meisterprüfung für Fotografie in Graz. Seither ist Graz ihr primärer Lebens- und Arbeitsmittelpunkt. 1985 wandte sie sich hin zur Kunst- und Architektur-Fotografie. Zwei Jahre später präsentierte sie nach einem längeren Arbeitsaufenthalt in Norwegen ihre Debüt-Ausstellung „tip toe“ in Oslo. Zita Oberwalder ist Mitglied der Tiroler Künstler:innenschaft, der IG Architekturfotografie, und RHIZOM – Verein zur Förderung medienübergreifender Kultur-Arbeit. Regelmäßig kooperiert sie mit KünstlerInnen und ArchitektInnen im Rahmen diverser Projekte und Ausstellungen.

Short Biography
The artist was born in Leisach, East Tyrol, Austria, in 1958. She trained to become a photographer in Lienz and Inns- bruck, finally completing her training in Graz, receiving a master craftman’s diploma. Ever since she has primarily been residing in and working out of Graz. In 1985 she shifted her main focus towards art and architecture pho- tography. Two years later, after a lengthy work stay in Norway, she presented her first exhibition “tip toe” in Oslo. Zita Oberwalder is a member of the Tiroler Künstlerschaft (Tyrolean artists’ association), the IG Architekturfotografie, and RHIZOM – Association for the promotion of cross-media cultural work. She frequently collaborates with other artists and architects for various projects and exhibitions.
